Throughout the Bible, there are many examples of individuals who possessed spiritual gifts of prophecy, divination, and supernatural insight. From Joseph interpreting Pharaoh's dreams in Genesis to the apostle John's visions in the Book of Revelation, the Bible is filled with stories of those who could perceive information and future events through divine inspiration and revelation.
In the New Testament, the apostle Paul discusses the various spiritual gifts that God bestows on believers, including the gift of prophecy: "Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy." (1 Corinthians 14:1) He goes on to explain that "the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation." (1 Corinthians 14:3)
The spiritual gift of prophecy is clearly portrayed in a positive light in the Bible as something to be sought after and used to edify and guide others. And what the biblical prophets did is not so different from what many modern day psychics and intuitives aim to do - use their God-given spiritual senses and abilities to provide people with guidance, insight, and a clearer picture of God's plans.
Well-known evangelical pastor Pat Robertson has said "There's nothing wrong with interpreting dreams and visions, if God has given you that ability...The prophet Daniel did it!" He argues that just as the prophets and seers of the Bible used their divine gifts to help others, so can spiritually attuned individuals today.
Actress and producer Oprah Winfrey has also spoken positively about seeking wisdom and guidance through spiritually gifted people: "For me, the most powerful way to get divine guidance is through listening to that still, small voice within. And sometimes, when I need greater clarity, I turn to others who I believe have been given a special spiritual gift of insight."
Of course, discernment is key when it comes to putting stock in the words of a psychic or medium. The Bible warns against false prophets and instructs believers to "test the spirits to see whether they are from God." (1 John 4:1) Not everyone who claims to have spiritual abilities can be trusted.
But for those psychics and intuitives who truly seek to use their gifts to provide loving guidance, encouragement and clarity to others - just like the prophets and seers of the Bible - they can be a channel of God's wisdom and a light in the darkness. As the Book of Proverbs says, "Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety." (Proverbs 11:14)
